In a noteworthy political development, Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by the incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan, has put forward Omar Ayub as its candidate for the position of prime minister. Omar Ayub, the third generation from the family of Pakistan's president and Field Marshal Ayub Khan, began his political journey by joining the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) with his father, Gohar Ayub Khan, a few months before the 2002 general elections.

Making his debut in the National Assembly during the same elections, he later served in Shaukat Aziz's cabinet as the state minister for finance, where he claimed credit for significant infrastructure projects related to natural gas, electricity, and roads in Haripur.

Despite facing a defeat in 2008, Omar Ayub returned to the assembly briefly in 2015 after a re-election ordered by the apex court in his constituency. He later joined PTI in February 2018 and successfully secured re-election in the 2018 general elections, representing Constituency NA-17 (Haripur). Subsequently, he became part of the federal cabinet under Prime Minister Imran Khan.
